  3.      MEDLINE records contain a powerful tool for subject searching: 
  4.      Medical Subject Headings, or MeSH.  They are in the MESH field
  5.      in MEDLINE on SilverPlatter.  Search in mesh to retrieve all
  6.      MESH headings, and in mjme to retrieve major headings only.  The
  7.      following screens describe MeSH headings and how to search them in
  8.      MEDLINE on SilverPlatter.

  10.      When an article is indexed for MEDLINE, the indexer at NLM assigns
  11.      several single- or multi-word terms for the most specific concepts 
  12.      covered in the article.  These terms, or MeSH headings, are selected
  13.      from the NLM authority list for subject analysis of the biomedical
  14.      literature.

  22.      MeSH headings are powerful searching tools.  They locate documents
  23.      by assigned controlled vocabulary, not free text words, and are 
  24.      independent of the occurrence of specific words in any other field.
  25.      For example, the search hypertension in mesh retrieves all documents
  26.      about that topic, although the word hypertension may not appear in 
  27.      the title or abstract.  MeSH headings help you focus your search and
  28.      eliminate out-of-context occurrences.

  32.      Indexers often attach subheadings to a MeSH heading to describe the
  33.      topic more specifically.  Examples of subheadings are:  diagnosis;
  34.      drug effects; therapy.

  41.      The MESH field contains all of the MeSH headings that are in the
  42.      record.  Headings preceded by an asterisk (*) are major headings, 
  43.      which represent the central concepts of the article.  Searching
  44.      in mjme limits your search to articles in which your topic is a focal
  45.      point, while searching in mesh retrieves all articles about the topic.
